JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Saturday night's shooting at the Melrose Apartment Complex has some people in the North Jonesboro neighborhood wondering if it's a safe place to live.

The Jonesboro Police Department says while there have been some incidents on the north side of Jonesboro, but this weekend's shooting is the year's first homicide. Monday, neighbors try to make sense of the tragedy as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

Flowers and memorials from friends and neighbors mark the spot where Verlee Harris, Junior was gunned down Saturday night.

"It's a tragedy. Somebody is gone too young, too fast," Kim Jones lives in the Melrose Apartment Complex and has considered moving.

"I heard a whole lot of arguing and the next thing I heard was gun shots. I wish it would have never happened. I wish I wasn't here to see this," says Jones.

Sergeant Steve McDaniel with the Jonesboro Police Department says the department responds to several calls in the north side of Jonesboro and have been working to clean up the crime. "We get a lot of calls for service in that area. There are extra police officers patrolled to that area. We've had the prowl unit out there that's working pretty hard," says McDaniel.

Those who live in the neighborhood say it's not just the police department's responsibility, but the community needs to get involved as well.
