Region 8 News obtained an exclusive interview with the driver of the car.

"I was coming down the road and the dude jumped out in front of me," said Phillip Hanley.

Police say Phillip Hanley was driving north on Greensboro road when five-year-old D'marja Daniels was suddenly in front of his car.

"He was standing on the side of the road and I mean he just like took running across.  I didn't have time to hit my brakes and he was right in front of the car and I hit him," said Hanley.

Corporal Heath McEntire with the Jonesboro Police Department tells Region 8 news after reviewing witness statements they believe Daniels ran out in front of the car and Hanley didn't have time to react.

"I didn't know if it was one of mine.  I was on my way from the store and I didn't know if it was one of mine or not," said a neighbor.

The accident happened in front of this house at 802 Scott Street.

"The kids are very careful crossing the road because the little boy comes over here and plays almost every day," said the neighbor.

This can be a very busy stretch of road, but now families say they will be more careful.

"We're already very careful.  I don't let them play on the edge of the road at all so that's how I know if a child was at the edge of the road they were about to cross the street," said the neighbor.
