GREENE CO, AR (KAIT) - Black plumes of smoke were high over Greene County Monday, but not from rice stubble, but old tires.
A fire on Highway 412 started around 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.
The school, East Elementary, closed years ago, and is now used as a salvage yard.
Old tires on the lot sent black smoke billowing up into the air.
Fire chief Jeff Evans of the North East Green County Fire Department tells Region 8 News knocking out the tire fire was not easy.
He said as soon as they doused one pile, another pile of tires would catch fire.
