JONESBORO, Ark. -- Former president Bill Clinton says that a centrist campaign is the key for Democrats winning the White House in 2004.

Clinton, speaking to reporters outside the Fowler Performing Arts Center on the campus of Arkansas State University, says that the issues he ran on led to him being the first Democrat to be re-elected since Roosevelt.

"I think you'll see our party run a more centrist campaign," Clinton said. "I was the first Democrat to be reelected in 60 years.

"I think we proved that there's a way to be rather traditional and progressive on issues in the Democratic Party. Civil rights, human rights, fighting poverty. We've moved 100 times as many people out of poverty as in the Reagan-Bush recovery in the 80s."
