MALDEN, MO (KAIT)- Earlier this week Cape Girardeau, Missouri was the site for a seismic conference were city officials came together to learn about emergency preparedness.
The mayor of Malden and it's city administrator traveled to the conference. Malden Mayor Ray Santie says one of the key points was being prepared in case of an earthquake. He also noted less than five percent of households in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas have an emergency preparedness kit.
Experts say people should be ready to take care of themselves for 72 hours to a week before emergency help can arrive.
