Fayetteville (ASU) — The Arkansas State women's tennis team competed at the USTA/ITA Central Regional hosted by the University of Arkansas this weekend in Fayetteville.
In qualifying action, senior Jenny Herring won her first match 6-1, 6-2 over Abby Buxton of Nebraska before falling to Bonnie Davidson of Tulsa 6-4, 6-4. Newcomer Ceara Howey dropped her first match to Saint Louis' Stephanie Hollis 6-1, 6-1 and fell again to Buxton in the consolation bracket 6-2, 6-7(5), 1-0(6).
Ioana Teu fell to SLU's Mia Elmore 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 but bounced back to win over Oral Roberts' Kristin Gray 6-0, 6-4 in a consolation match. Emily Crowe posted wins over Gray (6-0, 6-0) and Drake's Gabby Demos (7-5, 6-2) before being defeated by Madeleine Geibert of Nebraska (7-5, 6-3). She went on to win her consolation match over Oklahoma State's Leyla Simmons 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
Biljana Miloshevska dropped her first round match to SLU's Casey Miller 4-6, 6-3, 11-9, but she topped Amanda Aragon of Drake 6-2, 6-2 in consolation play.
ASU's Janie Nowland qualified automatically but dropped two singles matches, first falling to Tulsa's Michelle Farley 6-2, 6-1 and then to Arkansas' Jade Frampton 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, the Red Wolves picked up four wins. Nowland and Miloshevska topped Drake's Earlynn Lauer and Jessica Aguilera 8-2 before dropping a match to Minnesota's Natalia Pintusova and Magdalena Weicha 8-0. In consolation action, the A-State pair defeated Nebraska's Janine Weinreich and Jennifer Holmberg 8-4.
Crowe and Teu also won their first doubles match, taking down ORU's Gray and Victoria Dollar 8-0, but the duo also dropped their second match, falling 8-3 to Arkansas' No. 26 doubles team of Claudine Paulson and Anouk Tigu.
Herring and Howey fell in their first match to Aragon and Jessica Labarte of Drake 8-2, but they fought back to take an 8-6 win over Buxton and Maite Zeppernick of Nebraska in the consolation bracket.
The Red Wolves will be back in action Oct. 29-31 at the Southern Miss Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss.
