Eleven Point Recreation Sites Closed

DONIPHAN, Mo. -- Several Mark Twain National Forest Eleven Point Ranger District recreation sites in Carter, Ripley and Oregon counties may be temporarily closed over the next few months for repairs and improvements.

The sites where recreation improvements will be occurring include:

Watercress Recreation Area, located in Van Buren, Mo., Carter County.

Float Camp Campground; Doniphan, Mo., Ripley County.

Float Camp Day Use Area; Doniphan, Mo., Ripley County.

Deer Leap Boat Ramp; Doniphan, Mo., Ripley County.

Greer Campground; Alton, Mo., Oregon County.

Contractors will be completing a number of improvements, including:
Resurfacing existing parking areas and roads; adding road stripes and parking barriers.
Replacing existing paths and sidewalks or stairs to improve accessibility.
Replacing existing non-accessible, outdated and deteriorated toilets with accessible models and associated accessible sidewalks.
Refurbishing existing camp sites to include new furniture; also resurfacing existing camp site pads.
Realignment of Watercress Recreation Area campground road system.
Re-furbishing deteriorated and washed out river access sites with environmentally friendly building materials; improving accessibility.
Re-establishing drinking water at specific sites, and installing accessible hydrants.
Installing new signs.

Work will take place on various sites, as follows:
Watercress:   October 2010 to April 2011.
Float Camp/Dear Leap: November 2010 to May 2011.
Greer Campground: October 2010– March 2011.

"We expect some closures at the sites will be needed during October 2010 to May 2010 to provide for public safety and to give the contractor the space to complete the work in a timely manner," said Eleven Point District Ranger Tim Bond. "We don't know if only certain portions of any given site will be closed or if the entire site will be closed once work begins."

Bond said inclement weather or other project delays could extend these closures.
