Southeast Missouri Notes
Southeast Moves to 11th in FCS Polls
Southeast climbed two spots in the Sports Network and Coaches Polls this week. Southeast's No. 11 ranking is its highest in school history at the NCAA Division I level. The Redhawks have ranked among the Top-25 in the nation four-straight weeks.
Redhawks are Soaring
With another victory, Southeast will run its winning streak to eight games. The last time the Redhawks won eight-consecutive games during a season was 1955. That year, Southeast went a perfect 9-0 and won the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association title under Kenneth Knox.
QB Matt Scheible leads the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks 13th in the nation in passing efficiency with a 141.99 rating through eight starts. Scheible has completed 79-of-120 passes (65.8 percent) for 876 yards and six touchdowns. He threw a season-long 51-yard TD pass to WR Chantae Ahamefule his last time out against Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 23). Scheible, who has thrown only one interception, is 124 yards away from 1,000 passing yards this season.
More Records in Sight
RB Henry Harris is 243 yards away from breaking Southeast's all-time single-season rushing record. Harris has rushed for 1,129 yards on 201 carries through eight starts. Kelvin "Earthquake" Anderson currently holds the record with 1,371 yards in 1992. Harris also stands 318 yards away from becoming the school's all-time single-season leader in all-purpose yards.
Southeast is one of only seven Football Championship Subdivision teams with seven or more victories this season. To take it one step further, the Redhawks are one of three FCS teams with seven or more Division I wins. Jacksonville State and Appalachian State are the others in that elite group.
Saturday's game should be interesting if you are looking at things from a third-down perspective. Southeast leads the nation in third-down conversions, while UT Martin has been impressive keeping their opponents from moving the chains in third down situations. Southeast has converted 60 of its 112 third-down opportunities for an eye-popping 53.6 percent clip. Meanwhile, opponents are coverting only 33.1 percent (39-of-118, first in the OVC) of the time on third down against the Skyhawks this season.
The Defense Rests
Southeast has forced 17 of its league-high 19 turnovers in its last six games. The Redhawks forced three turnovers at Southern Illinois (Sept. 18), one vs. Tennessee Tech (Sept. 25), five at Eastern Illinois (Oct. 2), one vs.Tennessee State (Oct. 9), three at Austin Peay (Oct. 16) and four vs. Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 23). Southeast boasts a league-best +9 turnover margin this year.
