PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - A local Chamber of Commerce is working hard to keep tax dollars in the community.
Thursday was the "Shop Paragould First" kick off at East Side Baptist Church.
"Shop Paragould First" is a promotion that the Business Development Committee, with the Chamber of Commerce, does to encourage people to shop at home in Paragould instead of taking their tax dollars elsewhere.
Lesley Hobbs, Membership Director for the Paragould Regional Chamber of Commerce, says this is something that is important to the entire community.
"Shop Paragould First is extremely important to us. Because, you know, when you shop locally your tax dollars stay in that community. Which is really what we encourage. It's great for everything when the tax dollars stay here. Especially for our Chamber of Commerce."
To help encourage residents to shop at home, the Chamber has set up a contest with a big prize!
"We have a give a way. What we do with this give a way is people sign up for one thousand dollars in chamber bucks and how that works is it just encourages people to shop locally and also the money stays here because our chamber bucks at local chamber member businesses. So, there shopping once to register and then they're shopping again with the money that they win."
Hobbs says those tax dollars matter to the community in a number of different ways residents may not be aware of.
"Well, those tax dollars, they go to so many things. They go to our school system, our highway roads, economic development, just to name a few, and all to improve our community."
Local businesses picked their boxes up at the kick off and will be placing a blue bow on their door to let everyone know they are participating.
Lesley says they've sent out ninety boxes so far.
"Shop Paragould First" will run through December the 7th.
