LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Recent high school graduates have more time to apply for state-funded scholarships.
Governor Huckabee has extended the deadline to apply until August 1. Huckabee says the deadline was extended because confusion about scholarship availability led to fewer applications than expected.
Huckabee says scholarships are available for 3,700 students, although only about three thousand have applied. He says 2003 graduates and 2002 graduates, who were not given a chance to apply for the scholarships last year, are eligible to apply.
The scholarships, which are administered by the state Department of Higher Education, give students $10,000 over four years to attend an Arkansas college or university.
Applicants must meet financial and academic criteria.
The scholarship money was cut back last year because of state fiscal shortfalls, but funding was restored when the Legislature passed a budget in the spring.
