ASU Tennis wins two singles titles at Cougar Fall Draw

Houston (ASU) — The Arkansas State women's tennis team had a great showing at the University of Houston Cougar Fall Draw in Houston, Texas this weekend to end its fall season, winning two singles flights and advancing to the finals in four other flights (three singles, one doubles).

"We added this tournament to our fall schedule just two weeks ago," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams.  "We had some things to work on after the Regional, and we felt like playing in this tournament would give us enough time to work on those things before closing out our fall season. I feel like we accomplished a lot mentally and tactically that we were lacking. The girls played well and won some tough matches. I am especially proud of Jenny (Herring) and Menna (Kamal), who won their singles flights. They both had a great tournament."

Senior Jenny Herring won flight B, downing Sam Houston State's Imke Jagau 6-3, 6-4, Texas-San Antonio's Micaela Silva 5-7, 7-5, (10-0) and Southeastern Louisiana's Morgane Dadot 6-3, 6-4 to move into the finals.  She took the title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Houston's Giorgia Pozzan.

Menna Kamal also brought a singles title back to Jonesboro, winning flight D.  She posted a 6-4, 2-6, (10-7) win over Rice's Leah Fried in the opening round, before topping Texas State's Jessica Laing 6-3, 4-6, (10-5).  Kamal advanced to the finals with a 4-6, 7-5, (11-9) victory over Houston's Dionne Sanders, and the won the flight with a 7-5, 6-2 win over SHSU's Natalie Seira Petaia.

ASU's Emily Crowe topped SELU's Audrey Chelini 6-2, 6-4 and Rice's Jessica Jackson 7-6, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of her flight but fell to Texas State's Jessica Kahts 6-3, 6-4.

Arkansas State returner Ioana Teu also advanced to the semifinals of her flight, defeating TSU's Gabriela Rojas 6-1, 6-3 and UALR's Nathalia Garay 6-2, 6-1.  Teu fell in the semifinal match to Pozzan 6-7 (6), 6-2 (12-10).

Biljana Miloshevska advanced to the semifinals of flight C.  She had a bye in the opening round but topped TSU's Mariana Perez 6-1, 6-0 in the second round.  She then fell to Houston's Maja Kazimieruk 6-3, 5-7, (10-5).

Janie Nowland dropped her first singles match 6-0, 4-6, (10-5) to Lee University's Kinarkina, landing in the consolation bracket for her flight, but she went on to defeat SHSU's Tatyana Postnikova 1-6, 6-1, (10-4) and TSU's Melissa Hadad 6-4, 0-6, (10-6).  She won the consolation bracket 3-6, 6-2, (10-7) over Houston's Celia Fraser.

In doubles action, Herring and Ceara Howey advanced to the finals of flight B.  The two Red Wolves defeated Prairie View A&M's Lewis and Alejandra Barrera 8-3, SHSU's Jagau and Petaia 8-6 and TSU's Perez and Laing 8-5.  Herring and Howey fell in the finals to Rice's Dominique Harmath and Alex Rasch 8-3.

Also in doubles play, Crowe and Teu teamed up for an 8-5 win over SHSU's Sheridan Currie and Cally Woerner before falling to TSU's Kahts and Hadad.  Nowland and Miloshevska defeated TSU's Rojas and Berenice Van Den Bergh 8-5 but fell to UH's Pozzan and Joanna Kacprzyk 8-6.

The Red Wolves will be back in action when they open the regular season Monday, Jan. 31 against Central Arkansas at the Jonesboro Country Club at 9:00 a.m.
