Police standoff ends with suspect's arrest

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -- UPDATE: by Lauren Payne - bio | email feedback

"The officers were out searching for a suspect that we had burglary warrants on and theft warrants," said Jonesboro Police Sergeant, Steve McDaniel.

Jonesboro Police say that suspect is 40-year-old James J. Eakes, Sr. of Jonesboro.

Upon making contact with Eakes at 510 Labaume regarding the warrants, police say he ran.

"The suspect then fled into the residence.   Officers were not able to follow him into the residence so we had a barricaded suspect situation on our hands," said Sgt. McDaniel.

Police say they considered Eakes armed and dangerous.

According to police, the swat  and negotiation teams surrounded the home.  After unsuccessful attempts to convince Eakes to come out, police say they deployed chemical irritants.

"About a minute later, the suspect was able to exit the residence and fled and was able to make it into a nearby residence," said Sgt. McDaniel.

Police say that nearby residence, located on Belt street, was occupied by an elderly man.

"It kind of upped the factor on the danger involved so the officers went into that residence a short time later.   They were able to secure the person that was in there, get him out safely, and right after that arrested Mr. Eakes," said Sgt. McDaniel.

Police say Eakes was hiding in the closet when they found him.  In addition, according to police, in the home on Labaume, they found a high powered assault rifle.  Fortunately, police say no one was hurt in the incident.

Police say additional criminal charges will be determined after a thorough review of the incident.
