Caruthersville, MO (KAIT) - Monday was week two of the high school playoffs in Missouri, and three teams in the bootheel picked up big wins to advance.
Sikeston 40, Cape Girardeau Central 0 (Southeast Missourian)
Sikeston's speed sucked the life out of Central's magical season.
The Tigers earned a second shot at the Bulldogs, this time in the Class 4 playoffs. But Sikeston's superior quickness proved too deadly for the Tigers.
Central suffered its second loss of the season to the Bulldogs on Monday, this time a 40-0 setback in a sectional playoff game. The loss ended Central's season at 10-2, which matched the school record for wins. It was a remarkable turnaround from last season's 0-10 campaign.
Sikeston (12-0) scored three touchdowns to grab a 21-0 lead at halftime, the same score at the intermission the last time the two teams met.
Central's biggest problem was that its offense never found consistency. The Tigers pummeled opposing defenses all season, except when they faced Sikeston. The Bulldogs shut out the Tigers twice.
While Central's season ended, the Bulldogs advanced to the Class 4 state quarterfinals. Sikeston will face Roosevelt, a 23-20 winner over Gateway, on Saturday.
Caruthersville 55, Herculaneum 21
The Tigers moved to 12-0 with a 55-21 victory Monday night. They will play Maplewood-Richmond Heights in the Class 2 Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm.
Dexter 28, Park Hills Central 20
Dexter advanced to the Class 3 State Quarterfinals with a victory over Park Hills Central. The Bearcats will play John Burroughs Saturday at 1:30pm.
