JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Arkansas State University has named Dr. Charles "Chuck" Welch its new president.

Welch was named president of Henderson State University in Arkadelphia in 2008, and previously served as the chancellor of the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope for three years.

Chosen from 13 applicants, Welch is the successor to Dr. Les Wyatt who retired as university president in the summer. ASU Jonesboro chancellor Dr. Robert Potts had been serving as Interim President while the decision was being made.

Welch was interviewed Tuesday by the university.  It also interviewed Dr. Richard J. Federinko of Dadeville, AL, senior vice chancellor at Troy University and Dr. William B. Richardson, Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA, chancellor of the LSU Agricultural Center, and Chalkley Family Endowed Chair.
