JONESBORO (11/11/10) – Arkansas State head men's golf coach Steve Johnson announced Thursday that Cape Town, South Africa native Christian Helmbold has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Red Wolves next season.
Helmbold has been a member of the Wynberg Boys High School first golf team since 2004, and he was awarded the team's Most Valuable Player award in 2009. A team captain and colours, blues and honours selection, he led Wynberg to a runner-up finish in its league from 2007-09.
Helmbold also made the Western Province under-18 and under-23 two years in a row, received the match play champion award and held the best record on the first team at Wynberg.
Helmbold has been a Westlake Golf Club junior member since 2002, winning the Senior Club Champs C Division at age 12, and a Westlake Golf Club Premier League Golf Team member since 2007. He won the Westlake Junior Club Championships in both 2008 and 2009 and finished third in the Senior Club Championships in 2009. Helmbold won the Westlake Golf Club Prentice Trophy for player of the year in 2009 as well.
Helmbold has also competed in Western Province Junior Golf Foundation (WPJGF), Western Province Golf Union (WPGU), South African Junior Golf Foundation (SAJGF) and South Africa Golf Association (SAGA) events. He is currently ranked third in the Western Province, 20th in the Senior WPGU Order of Merit and among the top 30 players in South Africa under-18.
"We're very excited to have Chris become a part of our program," said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. "He is obviously one of the most decorated players that we have signed recently. He is an outstanding player and also an outstanding student in the classroom, and we definitely expect him to be a tremendous asset to our program."
