JONESBORO, Ark. (11/12/10) – Ole Miss rallied from a eight-point Arkansas State lead at the half to down the Red Wolves 68-60 in ASU's men's basketball opener Friday night at Tad Smith Coliseum.
The game went back and forth with the lead changing six times as ASU moved to 0-1 on the season with Ole Miss moving to 1-0. The Red Wolves are 1-2 in season openers under head coach John Brady.
Junior forward Martavius Adams finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Red Wolves in both categories and scored the Red Wolves first six points of the contest.
ASU had two other players score in double-digits with Donald Boone scoring 13 and Rashad Allison pouring in 12.
Preseason All-SEC selection Chris Warren led all players scoring 26 for Ole Miss.
ASU was outrebounded 31-38 but held in the paint matching the 38 scored down low by the Rebels.
"It was a good game for us, after our first two exhibition games I was a little concerned because we practiced for three weeks and after those two games I didn't know whose team that was because we didn't play very well. We played better tonight but I think the difference in the game was our inability the second half, we gave them too many offensive rebounds," said Brady. "We played hard and rebounded ok for the most part but we didn't make any big shots from the perimeter. We need to find someone who can make a big shot from the perimeter at a crucial moment in the game."
The Red Wolves led 32-24 at the half, paced by Boone who had 11 first half points. Allison was second at the break with 10 including shooting 5-6 from the charity stripe. ASU also outscored the Rebels in the paint during the first half 16-14 and outrebounded Ole Miss 20-19 at the break.
ASU built its largest lead of the contest when they went on a 10-0 run capped by back-to-back three pointers by Allison and Boone with 5:56 remaining in the half.
Ole Miss recaptured the lead at the 11:51 mark of the second half when Trevor Gaskins put back a layup.
A layup by Trey Finn at the 8:46 mark gave ASU but a jumper by warren gave the Rebels the lead at 6:56. ASU tied the game again on a jumper by Jeremy Thomas at the 6-minute mark but were unable to recapture the lead.
