JONESBORO, Ark. (11/12/10) — The Arkansas State Red Wolves (16-11, 10-5) took a 3-0 Sun Belt Conference victory over the ULM Warhawks (0-24, 0-14) Friday night at the ASU HPESS Facility.
A-State got off to a rocky start, allowing ULM to take the first four points of the match. It was a game of catch-up until the Red Wolves scored four straight points to tie 19-19. The set tied again at 21, but Arkansas State pulled out the win with another four consecutive points, landing the score at 25-21.
ASU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set on a Warhawk error and back-to-back service aces from sophomore Allison Kearney. ULM's rally fell short with the Red Wolves scored seven straight points to set the score at 25-16. Arkansas State saw another early lead in set three, going up 11-4. The Warhawks pulled within one, but the Red Wolves rattled off another six consecutive points and took the set by a final score of 25-18.
Junior Cayla Fielder led the team with 13 kills, while sophomore Jasmine Terry pounded out 11 and freshman Ashley Tipps added 10. Fielder and Terry led the team in blocks, each with two, and Kearney put up 40 assists. Three Red Wolves posted double-digit digs including freshman Megan Baska with 13, freshman Sadie Clark with 11 and Kearney with 10.
The ASU volleyball squad will close out its regular season Saturday when it hosts Louisiana-Lafayette in a 7:00 p.m. contest at the HPESS. With a win over the Ragin' Cajuns, the Red Wolves can clinch a second consecutive SBC West Division Co-Championship.
