Education Session May Not Happen

July 8, 2003 - Posted at: 5:46 p.m. CDT

BRYANT, Ark. -- Governor Huckabee says he may not call a special legislative session on education reform unless he sees signs an agreement is possible.

Huckabee says he is concerned by the tone some legislators have struck in discussing court-mandated school improvements.

He says he is worried that some legislators have focused more on avoiding school restructuring and gutting the authority of the state Board of Education than on arriving at a consensus on how to improve the schools.

State Senator Shane Broadway attended the meeting in Bryant where Huckabee made his remarks today. Broadway says he hopes an adequacy study currently being conducted by a legislative panel can help legislators reach agreement.

Earlier Tuesday, Huckabee said he would leave it up to legislators to set efficiency levels that small school districts would have to reach to avoid consolidation under his restructuring plan.
