Mo. babysitter convicted of causing fatal trauma

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A southwest Missouri woman has been convicted in the death of a 9-month-old boy she was babysitting. Greene County Circuit Judge Calvin Holden found 55-year-old Brenda Caringer guilty Thursday of child abuse resulting in death.

The judge heard five days of testimony, including the opinions of two medical examiners that Lucas Theede-Bennett died from a powerful blow to the head. Lucas was injured while Caringer was babysitting him in January 2009 at her home in Willard.

KYTV reports Caringer did not testify in the trial. She has been in the Greene County jail since she was charged last February, and faces up to 30 years in prison when she's sentenced Jan. 21.
