Arkansas Fort Smith opens 'Lion's Den' dormitory

FORT SMITH, AR (AP) - The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith has opened a dormitory complex the school is calling the Lion's Den.

The Fort Smith Times Record said school officials held a grand opening for the dormitory on Thursday, though it was completed in August. The complex has a capacity of 446 students

UAFS, formerly known as Westark Junior College, is now part of the University of Arkansas System. It began offering four years of coursework in 2005.

Peggy Weidman, a UAFS Board of Visitors trustee and a graduate of the school, said the Lion's Den would allow area high school students the opportunity to obtain a traditional on-campus college experience without leaving the area.
