Arkansas cities high in crime ratings

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A crime ranking lists five of Arkansas' urban areas are among the nation's 10 most dangerous, but civic leaders and others say the study by CQ Press is misleading.

CQ Press' annual publication "City Crime Rankings" lists the Pine Bluff metropolitan area at No. 2 nationally, Memphis-West Memphis at No. 3, Hot Springs at No. 6, Little Rock at No. 9 and Texarkana at No. 10.

Jeffrey Walker, a criminologist at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, says such rankings are "detrimental to the development" of cities. Pine Bluff Alderman Glen Brown tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette the study perpetuates a negative perception of his community and says the statistics used are "misleading." Little Rock police spokesman Lt. Terry Hastings says the study is "bogus and skewed" because of its methodology.
