Huckabee Wants Higher School Standards

July 17, 2003 - Posted at: 3:41 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Governor Huckabee continues to defend his plan to increase high school course offerings.

He says Thursday that legislators apparently expect Arkansans to absorb vast tax increases to prop up a mediocre education system.

Huckabee says that approach makes no sense to him, but that unless something changes, that's exactly what could happen. Huckabee says he won't support a plan without significant changes in academic standards.

His remarks came a day after a special legislative committee recommended spending $719 million a year in new money on education. The recommendation is part of efforts to meet a state Supreme Court mandate to overhaul Arkansas' school funding system.

The court gave legislators until January First to find solutions.
