William "Hud" Jackson named new football coach at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. (AP) - The University of Arkansas at Monticello

has named William "Hud" Jackson as its new football coach.

The Tuesday announcement comes after Gwaine Mathews resigned

from the position on Nov. 22. Mathews posted a 22-44 record over

six years leading the Boll Weevils.

Jackson has served the past six seasons as associate head coach

at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

The 43-year-old Jackson will lead the NCAA Division II team in

its first year outside of the Gulf South Conference. A number of

Arkansas schools broke away from the league to help form the Great

American Conference, which starts play next year.

Jackson said after being introduced at the UAM campus that his

goal each year will be to win the conference and to reach the

national playoffs.
