Safety Issues Raised After Drowning

July 21, 2003 -- Posted at 5:00 p.m. CDT

HORNERSVILLE, Mo. -- A fishing trip turned dealy as two men drowned in a river floodway Saturday, bringing up the question of water safety.

Witnesses say two 19-year-olds: Orlan Johnson of Rector and John Ball of Leachville, were in a fishing boat on the floodway at Pierce Landing when the boat they were in flipped and dumped them into the water.

Those on hand say one of the young men tried to swim to shore, but went back to help his friend and in the process was pulled under with him.

Missouri state law requires that lifejackets must be present on board. Reports indicated that neither man was wearing one when the accident occured.
