Woman accused of stealing from injured niece

MOUNTAIN HOME, AR (KAIT) – A Mountain Home woman is in the Baxter County Detention Center accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her niece's estate.

39-year-old Teresa Lynn McMains is charged with theft of property, which is a Class B felony.

According to Baxter County Sheriff's investigator Drayton McDaniel, McMain's niece was injured in an accident several years ago and was issued a settlement.  McMain was made the guardian of the girl's estate.  When the alleged victim turned 18 years old, she discovered the settlement money was gone and that several thousands of dollars in medical expenses had gone unpaid.

The sheriff's office says McMain received checks on behalf of the victim for more than $73,900 but did not spend the money on the victim or pay the victim's medical bills.

McMain was arrested and booked into the Baxter County Detention Center on $83,000 bond.

She's scheduled to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court on January 6, 2011.
