Protecting your loved ones from domestic violence

BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) - The Craighead County Sheriffs Department says Kandi Hanley died during a case of domestic violence.  Hundreds of cases of domestic violence happen across Region 8 every year and some do end in tragedy.

"There are no 100% guarantees, there are no magic words to force families or victims of domestic violence to do what we want them to do," said Women's Crisis Center Executive Director Vicki Crego.

"We can't force the victim to actually do anything," said Craighead County Sheriff's Deputy Jeania Burns.

Deputy Burns said they do what they can for a victim, including telling them about resources they can take advantage of.

"Know domestic violence resources in your community, give the person who needs those services the correct information, know your facts and be as honest as with that person as you can," said Crego.

There are many reasons why a victim does not leave an abusive situation.

"They are simply afraid and usually that is because the abuser has told them if you tell I will do the following," said Crego.

Which Crego said can include threatening to hurt the victim, the family of the victim or themselves.

"They'll say it's their fault too or they don't want their husband or boyfriend to get into trouble," said Burns.

If you are a victim of domestic violence experts say don't go back to your abuser, which is something Deputy Burns said she sees quite often.  Crego said she hopes a case like this one can be eye opening to other families.

"As tragic as it is, sometimes these situations save other lives or it leads to people being more aware of how these situations can end up," said Crego.

There were almost 100 cases of domestic violence reported to the Craighead County Sheriff's Department in 2010.  Crego said they get around 300 calls a month into the domestic violence hotline.
