Still no resolution for the Harrisburg School Board

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Emergencies are emergencies.   I was removed from the board when I wasn't here, it's not fair to ask that be done to someone else," said Byron Neal.

Byron Neal was not voted onto the Harrisburg School Board last year.

A family emergency for one of Harrisburg's school board members prevented all five of the original board members from drawing lots at Monday night's school board meeting.

"Obviously some resolution would be nice," said Neal.

You'll recall Byron Neal was not voted onto the interim board by the other Harrisburg school board members; however, a circuit judge ruled the original five would have to draw lots to determine which 4 would serve going forward.  The fifth seat is held by a Weiner representative.

"It's tearing the community apart," said Harrisburg School Board President, Frankie Lindsey.

Lindsay says it's putting a strain on the district from legal fees to simply having this unresolved issue.  He says he believes this could have been prevented.

"I think it's a matter of feelings got hurt and just didn't think it was fair," said Lindsey.

School superintendent Danny Sample says basically when  the lots are finally drawn, no matter what happens, the interim board will stay the same until ongoing court proceedings are complete.

Byron Neal says he's ready for some resolution.

"If we draw lots and I lose, I'm good with it, because all I've asked all along is , hey let's do this fairly," said Neal.

"We did what we thought was best for the students and the faculty of this school district,"

Again a family emergency for one of the board members prevented them from drawing lots Monday night.  No date has been rescheduled yet.  This is a story we will continue to track and we will let you know when a new date for the action is set.
