UNT women's basketball coach Shanice Stephens suspended for one game

Denton, TX (Denton Record-Chronicle) - UNT women's basketball coach Shanice Stephens has been suspended for the Mean Green's game Thursday at home against Florida International by the Sun Belt Conference for her conduct following a loss to Middle Tennessee last week.

Stephens ran up the tunnel toward the referees' dressing room while they were exiting the floor following the game. She acknowledged after the game that she was trying to speak with someone about the game, but would go into no further detail.

Assistant coach Larry McNeil will take over as UNT's head coach for its game against the Golden Panthers. McNeil has 15 years of college coaching experience, including a stint as the head coach at Talladega College.

"I regret it," Stephens said. "It was out of character for me. I should not have let my anger show. It was a lesson learned. Everyone can make mistakes."

UNT has lost its last five games and is 3-14 on the season, including an 0-4 mark in Sun Belt Conference play.
