Original Harrisburg School Board members draw lots

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) "Had I drawn the "x", I would have been satisfied because all I was seeking all along is that we follow the law and draw lots," said Byron Neal.

Byron Neal, the man not voted onto the new Harrisburg School Board may now  be one step closer to getting a seat.

"Well obviously I'm pleased," said Neal.

As ordered by the courts, the 5 original board members, including Byron Neal, drew lots at a specially-called school board meeting Thursday night.

"We will go on with the appeal," said Harrisburg School Board President, Frankie Lindsey.

Lindsey says even though Byron Neal didn't draw the "x", no changes will be made to the board, until a decision has been made regarding the Harrisburg School District's appeal of the judge's first ruling.  That includes how the school board was formed when Weiner was annexed into the district--including Byron Neal not being voted onto the new board.

"It's a lot of concern about the money being spent and where the money is going so we're going to go on with the appeal to see how it turns out," said Lindsey.

As for drawing lots, there were 5 index cards--one had an "x"- it's the one nobody wanted.

"It's going to play out as it's going to play," said Harrisburg School Board member, Barry Massengill.

A nearly 16-year veteran of the board, Barry Massengill, drew the card with the "x".

Despite that he says he isn't concerned about his future with the board.  He says they did what they thought was right for the district, children and patrons.

"Only way I'm going to change my opinion is the Supreme Court of Arkansas is going to have to tell me," said Massengill.

"I ran originally for the school board so that I could help make a difference.   I may get that opportunity still," said Byron Neal.

You'll recall Byron Neal was not voted onto the Harrisburg School Board by fellow members to make way for a member from the recently annexed Weiner School District. While it's still unclear when exactly this entire issue will be resolved, we will continue to track this story and bring you any updates.
