Missouri tuition hike could mean prestige boost

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - University of Missouri leaders say that a likely tuition increase will do more than just plug holes in campus budgets weakened by years of declining state support.

They also expect it would increase out-of-state enrollment and boost the university's prestige among students and parents outside Missouri.

The Board of Curators discussed campus finances in a video teleconference Friday, ahead of a late January meeting where they plan to increase tuition for the first time in three years.

The size of the increase won't be determined until Gov. Jay Nixon releases his proposed budget next week. But officials hope to keep it below 10 percent.
