CARBONDALE, IL (ASU) – Arkansas State senior James Ngwiri posted a second-place finish in the 3,000 meter run, freshman William Oliver finished second in the triple jump and freshman Shakira Nelvis led the ASU women with a third-place finish in the 60 meter dash in the final day of competition at the Southern Illinois University Saluki Open Saturday in Carbondale, Ill.
Ngwiri finished second in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:47.05, while Oliver jumped a personal-best 14.76 meters in the triple jump. Nelvis ran a 7.80 for the third-place finish in the 60 meter dash.
A-State's success on the second day of the Saluki Open came on the heels two first-place finishes the in pole vault when the meet opened Friday.
Pole vaulters Ethan Sandusky and Stephanie Foreman took top honors in the event as competition began Friday, with Sandusky clearing 4.79 meters to win the men's vault and Foreman jumping 3.74 meters to win the women's vault. ASU's Erica Naeger finished second behind Foreman with a jump of 3.59.
"Overall, I was very pleased with our showing this weekend," said ASU head coach Lon Badeaux. "We were obviously a little rusty coming off the break, which we expected, but those are fixable mistakes. Things are looking good for us and we will be happy to be back home next weekend at the ASU Invitational."
