LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – Police say a Tennessee man is behind bars after he's accused of stealing money, and then biting an officer while trying to swallow a meth baggie.

The arrest came Saturday afternoon in Lawrence County after a homeowner complained that money was missing after a meat door to door salesman visited his home.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, the homeowner gave police a vehicle description of the salesman after he said the suspect stole $118 from his home. Police were able to identify the salesman as Mark Mittag from Lakeland, Tennessee.

Police caught up to Mittag a little later, when the questioned him about the theft and then searched the car and found the $118. Police then placed Mittag under arrest and asked him if he was carrying any illegal drugs. Mittag said he didn't have anything on him, and police took him to the Lawrence County Jail.

While booking, police say Mittag placed a baggie of meth in his mouth. When the jailor tried to stop him, Mittag bit the jailor and started to resist. The jailor was able to gain control and recovered the baggie and later taken to the hospital to clean out the bit.

Mittag is being charged with theft of property, possession of a controlled substance meth, furnishing articles into a correctional facility, and aggravated assault on a correctional officer.

Mittag is expected to go before judge on Tuesday to have his bond set.
