What you need to know before filing your taxes online

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) At Liberty Tax Service in Paragould, business will soon be booming.

"By January 31st, most people have got their W-2's and it really starts to peak about that time," said owner, Chris Robinson.

While a lot of people will look online to file their taxes, before you head to your computer or a professional, Chris Robinson says make sure you have the needed information right by your side.

"You're going to need all the names, and the correct spellings of the names of you, your spouse, and the dependents, any children, and social security numbers," said Robinson.

Robinson adds you need to be ready with all of your tax documents.

"W-2's, 10-99's, Any schedule B's.   Any tax documents that were sent to you by your banks, by your mortgage companies," said Robinson.

Robinson says there's no rule about who can or can't file online.  He adds it's really not even about how complicated each return is.

"It's how qualified you are as a person whether or not you're comfortable and know all of the tax laws and changes in the tax laws," said Robinson.

Robinson says there have been situations where people start online and realize they can't finish.

"Well at that point, they really only have one option and that's really to consult a local tax professional," said Robinson.

Robinson says while there might be different results when a professional does your taxes and when you do them, he says be sure you're comfortable with the results you get before you submit.

"Once you've submitted it, it's too late except by sending in a paper amendment, and then those take a lot longer," said Robinson.
