TUCKERMAN, AR (KAIT) - Feeding the hunger, and feeding the mind! At Tuesday's Literacy Fair in Tuckerman, the "Every Child is Ours" food pantry provided more than just a meal. While the organization is primarily known for its food pantry, the charity is also working to help those intimidated by governmental red tape.

"If you need some help with reading, computer literacy, or if you just need someone to sit and make some phone calls to other agencies, we have people who are ready to do that," says Jan Paskel, who is the President and Founder of "Every Child is Ours."

"You have to have someone to turn to. We know this is hard times here in Jackson County. I was traveling, helping people all over the world all of the time, but you've got to help at home first," says Paskel.

She says "Every Child is Ours" is an umbrella organization. The Jackson County Literacy Counsel is one of the many organizations it oversees. Tuesday's Literacy Fair not only provided information about adult literacy, but information was also available about Veteran Affairs and the Department of Health and Human Services.

"Medicaid, to Transitional Employment Assistance, to SNAP, which is formally known as food stamps," says Martha Robinson, with the Department of Health and Human Services.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services says forming a partnership with "Every Child is Ours" will help make their resources more available to individuals in smaller communities.

"I found that a lot of these agencies are ready to work for us. We just have to reach out to them," says Paskel, and that's what she hopes her organization becomes. "It's going to be more than food, it's going to be food for the mind and for the soul," says Paskel.

Paskel says if you missed Tuesday's fair, they are still eager to help. Volunteers are available at the organization every Monday from 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. Someone is also available at their office in the Tuckerman City Hall Tuesday - Friday from 8:30a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

TUCKERMAN, AR (KAIT) - Every Child is Ours in Tuckerman is sponsoring a literacy fair this afternoon to help people in the community.

While Every Child is Ours is primarily known for their food pantry, the organization is looking to not only to provide food to those in need, but food for the soul.  Representatives with the Department of Human Services and Arkansas Literacy Councils for Adult Literacy were in attendance.  President and founder Jan Paskel says she hopes to reach out to the community.  She wants to let people know about options available to them, including government services, food assistance, adult basic computer training, and adult literacy.  Volunteers were on hand to help assist with forms and paper work.

Coming up tonight on Region 8 News at 6 and 10, Amanda Hanson will bring you more on the event and what it means for Tuckerman.
