Arkansas Colleges Meet Deadline

ARKANSAS -- Arkansas's largest universities say they beat a federal deadline yesterday to register all of their foreign students into an electronic database. The schools are required to register the nearly two thousand foreign students into "SEVIS" or the Student and Exchan
Information System.

The system was created in 2001 as a security measure to keep track of people who enter the country to attend school or visit. The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas State and
Harding University, the state's largest schools, all met the deadline.

Officials said they tried to beat the deadline so they could be sure that their international students had all the proper paperwork to begin classes for the fall semester.
