Jonesboro's E-911 Center prepares for winter blast

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) Before the first flake even fell from the sky, E 9-1-1 Director Jeff Presley says the blast from old man winter was on their radar.

"We started preparing for this weather event two days ago, when the National Weather Service sent out an alert that there was a possibility for snow and ice for our area," said Presley.

Presley says this center is "on" 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and not being ready is simply not an option.

"We started calling in folks for call taking and started looking at our emergency generators making sure everything is ready to go just in case," said Presley.

With people and equipment ready for whatever Mother Nature throws our way, Presley is also using social media to keep residents informed on road condition, closings, and other information.

"Well I have a lot of folks who will interact with me on those social networks, and that's fine.   That's what we want them to do," said Presley.

With temperatures well below freezing, wet roads can lead to icy conditions on streets, bridges and overpasses, and dangerous black ice can wreak havoc on motorists.

"We're going to advise folks just to use extreme caution if they have to be out," said Presley.

Presley calls it a team effort citywide to keep residents safe.  He adds constant communication is a must for safe and effective service.

"It's crucial to notify our street department of intersections that may be a hazard to our citizens.   We notify our jets bus department," said Presley.
