National Night Out Neighborhood

August 4, 2003 - Posted at: 4:28 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, Ark. -- Local neighborhoods dedicated to fighting crime are ganging up for a national celebration.

The Department of Justice's "National Night Out Against Crime" encourages people to turn on their porch lights and get out and get acquainted with their neighbors. This year's event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5.

In central Jonesboro, a neighborhood playground is the place National Night Out organizers hope kids and their parents will meet to get to know their neighbors Tuesday night.

One local resident, C.J. Jackson, and his family will only have to walk out their front door to get in on the crime-fighting action. He says the cleaner neighborhood and the newer, community oriented police plans are working.

"It seems a lot safer," Jackson said. "Considering, you don't have as many people running from the police in the neighborhood, because you really don't have any place to hide."

If you don't have the location of the nearest neighborhood party, call the Jonesboro Police Department at (870) 935-5562 to find out how you can get involved tomorrow night starting at 7.
