Calculating the costs of a winter blast

By Lauren Payne - bio | email feedback

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) "We have a force of 9 trucks and 9 spreaders and they were all out trying to make it where everyone could get around," said Steve Tippitt at the Jonesboro Street Department.

Battling the brunt of old man winter can be an unpredictable fight.

"If you ever get behind, you play catch up with the whole storm. So yeah, it's better to be prepared and be ready for it," said Tippitt.

It can be costly too.  Back to back blasts from old man winter are adding up quickly.

"With fuel, materials and all that, it's approximately 15 thousand dollars with 2 of them.  The average would be somewhere around 75 hundred dollars," said Jonesboro Mayor, Harold Perrin.

A breakdown of the numbers provided to Region 8 news by Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin's office show fuel costs for the last 2 snow events cost the city nearly 5 thousand dollars.  Perrin says materials including sand and chemicals totaled just over ten thousand dollars.

Perrin says being proactive rather than reactive did help save.

"9-1-1 immediately sent out a flash to all of the department heads that ok this is coming, and you need to be prepared for that.   They already had the trucks lined up and filled and ready to go," said Perrin.

Perrin says the street department's budget is around 4 point 2 million dollars.  He adds winter weather events like this are already budgeted into the total cost for fuel and street materials.

"We've got to be very careful, and we've got to watch it on a day to day, monthly, and weekly basis," said Perrin.

Perrin says citizen safety is his top priority and if more resources need to go out to make sure it's safe, he says they'll look at trimming somewhere else later in the year, if necessary.  As for Steve Tippitt at the Jonesboro Street Department, he says they're ready for Mother Nature's next winter blast.

"We have five trucks inside now, and we're loaded and ready to go," said Tippitt.

Perrin says of course the bigger the storm, the bigger the price tag to clean up.
