BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) - Many places across the country are helping the earth by going green. The city of Batesville has joined that process by making a green way for you to travel from one location to another.

Mayor Rick Elumbaugh said, "This is actually our first phase of our Greenway Trail System that will actually accommodate biking and walkers."

The trail spans roughly a half mile from Harrison Street to Meyers Street and runs through Fitzhugh Park in downtown Batesville.

Mayor Elumbaugh says they received a $40,000 grant from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department to help build this trail.

Elumbaugh said, "We received a Growing Healthy Community award last year and what we're trying to do is promote fitness and health in our community."

Elumbaugh said exercise was one of the main goals for the trail.

"Provide a safe walking area for our youth to travel to and from school if they choose. Also it will provide our work force the opportunity and our citizens to come and get a good healthy walk in," said Elumbaugh.

But he said this trail can provide more than just health and fitness.

Elumbaugh said, "Any community that's healthy is going to be ahead of the game when it comes to economic development because individuals are looking for healthy individuals for the work force."

Elumbaugh said this is only the first piece of the puzzle to a much bigger picture.

"We have a master trail plan that will pretty much encompass the complete city. So we could when it's all said and done, it may take a few years to get there, but we could have possibly 13 miles of trails," said Elumbaugh.
