LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Governor Huckabee issued a strong challenge to school administrators and legislators Wednesday. He says they need to work with him or let the people decide on his plan to overhaul the public school system.
Huckabee addressed hundreds of school administrators, many of whom strongly oppose his plan. The governor says it's not enough to find a political solution to developing remedies for improving a system that the state Supreme Court declared unconstitutional.
The governor says any solution must satisfy the court's requirement that the state provide an equal and adequate education for all school children. The court gave the state a January 1 deadline to comply.
The governor says he's willing to work toward an agreement with the Legislature but would pursue a ballot initiative for November 2004.
