Arkansas V-A Hospital

August 7, 2003  - Posted 7:53 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.  --Central Arkansas veterans could benefit from plans to streamline federal Veterans Affairs health-care programs if a proposed spinal-cord injury center is built.

The plans dismay other officials around the country where V-A hospitals would close.

Officials at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System say they have few specifics about the proposed center. V-A Hospital spokeswoman Sharon Palmer says the national plan must clear several hurdles before it can be put into effect.

Besides the one in Arkansas, the V-A would place spinal-cord injury centers in Denver, Minneapolis, and Syracuse or Albany, New York. A 15-member national commission will consider the proposed changes and make recommendations to V-A Secretary Anthony Principi. He's expected to decide by year's end
