MO lawmaker wants states to have say on US debt

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) - A Missouri House member wants individual states to have more power over the national debt.

Republican Chuck Gatschenberger, of Lake St. Louis, is sponsoring a resolution urging Congress to a call convention to amend the U.S. Constitution.

Gatschenberger believes a majority of the country's 50 state legislatures should have to approve any increase in the federal debt.

The debt is currently about $14 trillion.

Gatschenberger's resolution has 42 co-sponsors in the Missouri House. He scheduled a news conference Monday afternoon at the Capitol to talk about the measure.

Federal debt resolution is HCR19
