Arkansas boy, 13, arrested for setting fire

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - A 13-year-old Newport boy was arrested Friday night after witnesses told police he set fire to a stack of cardboard behind WalMart.

According to Lt. Patrick Weatherford of the Newport Police Department, just before 8 o'clock Friday night officers and the Newport Fire Department were called to a fire behind the discount store, located at 2500 Malcom.

When they arrived they found several bales of compacted cardboard boxes on fire.

After reviewing store surveillance video, officers questioned three juveniles seen loitering around the area before the fire.  According to investigators, one of the boys admitted pouring an accelerant on the bales and setting them on fire with a cigarette lighter.

The boy was taken into custody.  He is currently being held at the White River Juvenile Detention Center in Batesville.  The suspect is scheduled to appear in juvenile court on Wednesday, February 2.  He's expected to be charged with arson, which is a Class B felony.
