Earthquake Preparedness Month

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - February is Earthquake Preparedness Month and although Region 8 doesn't have large quakes nearly as often as severe weather, it's still best to be prepared.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone runs right through northeastern Arkansas and southeastern Missouri, stretching from Missouri to the Arkansas Delta. While we've not had a major earthquake here in years, that's no reason to let down your guard.

David Moore, Craighead County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator said, "We've got to have everybody prepared because in a major event you are going to have people out there and it's going to be hard for people to travel and come in to get supplies."

He said in the event of a major earthquake you need to have a plan in place for your family.

"If you have children work with them, talk to them. Make sure they understand that if it happens, get out of that house as soon as they can, but you need to have a meeting place for them," said Moore.

Over the years there have been multiple theories or myths of where to seek shelter. Moore said there is only one thing to do and that's drop, cover and hold!

"Get under a heavy table, hang on to the leg of it, and just ride it out because you're not going to be able to do anything once it begins other than that," said Moore.

You also want to put together an emergency preparedness kit.

Moore said, "Put canned food, non-perishable foods of any type, blankets, water."

Moore said you need to store a gallon of water a day for each person in your house.

Also don't forget about batteries for flashlights and electronics.

Moore said, "Preferably a small portable radio that not only will pick up radio stations but TV stations."

Preparing for an earthquake can also help in other natural disasters.

"The same things we do for the earthquake a big portion of that is also going to take care of us during the tornado, or the snowstorm or whatever major disaster it is," said Moore.

If you are interested in learning more information about earthquake preparedness, The Earthquake Outreach Tour will be held next Monday, February 7th from 1pm-3pm at St. Bernards Auditorium.
