Nettleton alum Matt Mouzy hits 8 3-pointers in UALR win over Denver

LITTLE ROCK (UALR) - UALR senior Matt Mouzy hit eight three pointers, including two in overtime, to lead the Trojans to a 75-72 victory over Sun Belt Conference West Division-leader Denver at the Jack Stephens Center on the Thursday night. Mouzy went 8-of-10 from three-point range on his way to game-high 24-point effort to help the Trojans (13-11, 5-4) improve to 10-0 all-time against the Pioneers (11-11, 7-2) in Little Rock.

Chase Hallam led Denver with 22 points in the losing effort, and hit a game-tying three pointer with 1.3 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Travis Hallam added 17 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Pioneers. The two teams, which entered the game ranked fourth (UALR) and fifth (Denver) in the nation in three-point shooting, combined to make 21 three pointers on Thursday, with the Hallam brothers shooting a combined 8-of-13.

Denver held a slim one-point lead in overtime, 72-71, after Travis Hallam sank a pair of free throws with 28.7 seconds left to play. Down by one, freshman Chuck Guy drew contact on a drive to the basket and promptly sank both free throws to give UALR a 73-72 edge with 18 seconds remaining.

The Pioneers went to Chase Hallam on the ensuing possession, but the sophomore guard missed a shot inside, and junior D'Andre Williams sank two foul shots on the other end with 4.8 seconds left to give UALR a three-point lead. Denver had one last shot to tie the game as it inbounded the ball with 4.8 seconds left, but the Pioneers' heave to half court was intercepted by the Trojans.

Both teams shot an identical 24-of-48 from the field in the game (50.0 percent), but the Trojans went 11-of-17 from three-point range (64.7 percent) led by Mouzy's 8-of-10 performance. The Jonesboro, Ark.-native finished with a season-high 24 points over a career-best 42 minutes. Mouzy's eight three-point field goals allowed him to move into third place on UALR's all-time list for career three pointers with 202, while also moving into 25th place on the Sun Belt's all-time list.

Denver opened the game with a 10-0 run on its way to a 30-23 lead at the break. The Pioneers led 39-29 with 16:03 left to play in the second half, but the Trojans came to life with an 18-1 run, with 10 points from Garcia-Mendoza, to take a 47-40 lead with 9:00 remaining. The Trojans appeared to be on their way to winning in regulation after a three pointer by Mouzy put UALR ahead 55-47 with 2:26 to go, but Trevor Noonan delivered a three-point play and Travis Hallam nailed a three pointer after a Trojan turnover to bring the Pioneers within two, 55-53.

Garcia-Mendoza extended UALR's lead back to four points, 57-53, but Travis Hallam banked in a three pointer from the wing with 22 seconds left to make it a one-point game. Williams went to the line with 18.3 seconds remaining and sank both foul shots to put the Trojans back on top by three, 59-56, but Chase Hallam connected from long range with 1.3 seconds left on the clock to send the game into overtime.
