BOWLING GREEN, KY (Bowling Green Daily News) - Willie Taggart has found a new leader for his defense.
WKU announced today that Taggart has hired former Miami-Ohio interim head coach Lance Guidry as the team's new defensive coordinator.
Guidry – who is scheduled to meet with the media at 2 p.m. today – replaces former defensive coordinator Clint Bowen, who left WKU for a similar position at North Texas in December.
"When our defensive coordinator position opened up, I told people we were not going to settle for just anybody," Taggart said in a statement. "We were going to make the best hire for WKU, and we were not going to rush things. After a very thorough process, there is no doubt Lance Guidry is the perfect person to be our new defensive coordinator.
"He is a winner and a proven leader who motivates people to do their very best."
Guidry served most of last season as Miami's defensive backs coach but was then promoted to interim coach after former Red Hawks coach Mike Haywood left the program in December for a head coaching position at Pittsburgh.
From there, Guidry guided Miami to a victory in the 2010 GoDaddy.com Bowl over Middle Tennessee in January.
Guidry's tenure as interim coach was short-lived, however, as Miami hired former Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell as its next head coach on New Year's Eve.
A 1995 graduate of McNeese State, Guidry coached in the Louisiana high school ranks before eventually became McNeeese State's defensive coordinator – a position he held from 2000-04. From there, Guidry returned to the high school level where he served as head coach at Carencro (La.) High School from 2005-07. He joined the Miami staff in 2008.
"WKU is a program on the rise, they are going about building the program the right way, and I am very excited and proud to be their next defensive coordinator," Guidry said in a statement. "I was very excited when Coach Taggart called and asked me to interview because he said he wanted someone with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and I feel those are two qualities I definitely bring forward."
