Students traveling to Washington DC to learn about saying "No" to drugs

WALNUT RIDGE, AR (KAIT) –A group of Region eight kids are gearing up for a trip to the nation's capital.

It's not for a field trip but to learn more about saying "no" to drugs!

This is the first time teens with the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Coalition have attended the National Youth Leadership Initiative Conference in Washington D.C.

Five teens from the Hoxie, Walnut Ridge, Hillcrest and Sloan Hendrix schools will be making the trip along with several adults, including Lawrence County Sheriff Jody Dotson.  The teens will be learning strategies to help other teens say "no".  Many of the teens attended a "mid-year" conference over the summer learning "positive peer pressure".

"It's up to the youth in the community to get involved to learn the same strategies as adults," said Alison Oglesby of the ATOD Coalition.

"I can't stop them but I can get people to help by joining the coalition or tell them what we're doing and tell them it's not good," said Brooke Midgett.

The trip is being funded through the ATOD Coalition.
