Region 8 agency is traveling to help seniors

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - An organization is working hard to make sure that Region 8 senior citizens are well informed. The East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging is holding a series of informative meetings on Medicare and Medicare Assistance for the public.

Counselors were on hand at the Senior Center in Paragould on Friday. Customer Service Manager with the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging, Donna Monehan, says seniors are often unaware of what services are available and what they're eligible to receive. "We have found that people are not aware. These programs are out there and they just don't know it. So, our job is to get out to the people and give them the information. Let them know that this is here for you."

It is for this reason, the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging decided to take their meetings to different communities in the counties they serve. "We are trying to get people signed up for extra help. This helps them pay for their medication, or for their medicare premium."

Monehan says they were not only providing information, but going through the paperwork necessary to sign up for programs.

Friday was actually the sixth public meeting East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging hosted in Region 8.

Monehan says they have also encountered some misconceptions seniors have about the amount of income they should or shouldn't have to get help. "Some of them think that they are over the limit for the income and they think it's for Medicaid people and that's not true. You can have a higher income for the medicine program and others."

Two representatives from the Department of Human Services were on hand to answer questions and provide assistance.

Representative from Medic One were also on hand offering free blood pressure checks to the seniors in attendance.

Monehan says they have these public meetings booked through the month of June.

Their next meeting will take place in March in Forest City and then they will be in Jonesboro in June. The East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging serves twelve counties in the Region 8 area.
