Pryor named to bird conservation commission

TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas has been named to a federal commission that reviews and approves the purchase of wetlands and other areas for the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Pryor says the appointment to the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission is an honor and that his presence on the panel will ensure that Arkansas' interests are "well represented." The eight-member commission is chaired by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and meets three times a year.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that the commission approves federal funding for public-private partnerships to help manage and restore wetlands. The commission is funded through the sale of hunting and conservation stamps and duties collected on arms and ammunition.
