One month later: Giffords recovering at 'lightning speed'

HOUSTON (RNN) - Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-AZ, is recovering at "lightning speed," according to a statement released by her husband on Facebook.

"I want the families of all the other victims and the entire Tucson community to know that Gabrielle will soon stand by your side to mourn this tragedy and learn how we can heal," said Giffords' husband, astronaut Mark Kelly.

Kelly said that while her condition is speedily improving considering her injury, the doctors weren't joking when they called her recovery "a marathon process."

Kelly said that every day brings encouraging signs, however.

Giffords now has a healthy appetite, Kelly said. She's now eating three meals a day.

Kelly again extended his thanks to those who have continued to support Giffords four weeks after she was allegedly shot in the head by Jared Lee Loughner, 22. On Jan. 8, Giffords was hosting a constituent meet-and-greet at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, AZ.

"We can't thank you enough for the heartfelt show of support that has come in from all around Arizona and the nation," Kelly said.

In the mean time, Kelly asked for the nation to continue to keep Giffords in their thoughts. Her recovery is evidence that "prayers are being heard," he said.
